ALEX TAPSCOTT is the CEO and founder of Northwest Passage Ventures, an advisory firm building blockchain companies. I've got 2 hours and 10 minutes remaining on my Audible copy of Blockchain Revolution and here's what I think so far: This book should be required reading / listening for anyone with a future that includes internet based technologies; from infrastructure to implementation, especially for young adults with a lifetime of tech ahead of them. Why? Because what you learn in this book will help you navigate the inevitable future of technology and how the Blockchain will likely impact the world's societies for the better. Also, by understanding the Blockchain, you will give your CV a significant edge as the "Blockchain" buzzword starts ramping up.On the practical side, Blockchain Revolution will help you with geeky, casual conversation. You'll gain a general understanding of Bitcoin and what it means to "mine Bitcoin". It will fill you in on WHO is investigating and actually using Blockchain technology today (companies like AirBNB, Deloitte, USAA, IBM). The book will boost your comfort level with terminology like cryptocurrencies, permissionless distributed databases, hashing, blockchain transaction methodologies, smart contracts, and much more. You'll also be able to build a solid list of today's big players in the Blockchain world, so you'll know who to follow on Twitter as you're watching this technology unfold.On the dreamy world of dreams side, after reading Blockchain Revolution, I imagine that IF the potential for global prosperity were being delivered by a magic train, then Blockchain would be the rails. We are about to see, in the next 25 years, the elimination of barriers to entry for any and all business. I can see the Blockchain as the catalyst for an experimental, open source government... not Anarchy but an Open Source Democracy... An Openocracy? Anyway, this book made me think. Now I need YOU to read it so we can ponder the future together! Maybe over coffee... or beers.Hopefully, the Blockchain will be a tool to help us navigate through the uncharted waters of the impending (yet still theoretical) post-employment era as we approach the theoretical "singularity".Lastly, on the quality of the audiobook, it is fantastic. It's read by Audie Award Winning Audiobook Narrator Jeff Cummings, so it's really as good as it possibly could be. I sorta wish I had a copy of the physical book as well because some of the referenced names are foreign to my western ears. It took me an embarrassing amount of lunchbreak research to figure out that the person Jeff was talking about was "Dino Mark Angaritis" and not any number of other mishearings I was trying to process.
For the authors, the blockchain economy will revolutionize human interaction as much as the onset of the Internet has transformed information search, gathering, and use. Right now, economic activity can be characterized by a great deal of misinformation, inefficiencies, delays, knowledge gaps, and third party manipulation. For example, a foreign worker must absorb many foreign currency and bank fees in order to send a tiny remittance back home -- billions that go to middleman corporations (such as Western Union) that ought to be helping to alleviate poverty in developing countries. The authors contend that the blockchain can eliminate the need for third party institutions -- governments, financial corporations, currencies -- and as such create the nirvana that the Internet was supposed to have created -- democracy, individual empowerment, full openness and transparency. We've heard this language before at the onset of the Internet, and there is no reason to believe -- despite the best intentions and loud cheerleading of the authors -- that the blockchain economy would not be manipulated by the powers-that-be to serve their best interests.Essentially, the blockchain is an open-source user-generated public ledger of all transactions among participating members. The blockchain allows for instantaneous and anonymous transactions (like cash), but with the added benefit that members must behave themselves in order to build a strong reputation (like credit cards). The most important thing to appreciate about the blockchain is that it's designed to be entirely open source so that no one party or group can ever come to dominate it, and thus warp the blockchain to serve its interests. The blockchain is entirely maintained by "miners," the millions of individuals around the world that have installed sophisticated software in order to maintain the integrity of the blockchain (while being rewarded with bitcoin).The authors find blockchain so exciting and marvellous that they imagine it spreading to many different sectors of the economy, society, and political system. They do spin a great tale of the dawn of a new future. But as the Internet taught us don't get your hopes up. Bitcoin is the perfect currency for the dealing of illegal drugs and for gambling, and it will be a while before the mainstream catches on.
An interesting read, but for the most part a harried chronicling of people and trends (mostly people) in a hyper dynamic space. A lot of Nobel laureate name dropping (to which, to their credit, they admit!). Has the feel of someone trying to get a book out there to take advantage of the thirst for new insight. Some good brain candy.Would have expected a better "primer" on how block chain actually works. Given the audience this tome appears aimed at, a few paragraphs ("How this worldwide ledger works") seems a bit under-serving - particularly for such an avowedly history-changing paradigm. Readers must understand this thing before trusting it, which for the most part is mysterious and geeky. Demystification would help move blockchain out of the comfort zone of PhD's into the realm of the mere unwashed (in which this reviewer sits). And nothing on the mystery surrounding Satoshi himself - what's up with that? Given that we're dealing with a new trust paradigm, doesn't the fact of his anonymity (existence?) not at least merit some comment?Only part I would recommend is found at Chapter 10 "Showstopper issues"... Ironic, of course but best analysis is here!
OMG this book was a waste. Tapscott used to be a great writer. This was a meandering repetition of the promise of blockchain to solve everything from lobal pandemics to hangnails. Don't look for an explanation of how blockchain actually works. Don was to caught up in the miracles of the product to bother with such pedantic topics. I made it about 2/3 of the way through and decided that I could find better things to do with my time.
